Value-based healthcare
Outcomes that matter, not activity
We orient our entire operation around the value a scan creates, the diagnoses it enables, the pathways it shortens and the patients it reassures.
What we mean by value
Value-based healthcare, as defined by Professor Michael Porter at Harvard Business School, means delivering health outcomes that matter to patients relative to the cost of achieving those outcomes. It is a shift away from rewarding volume, towards rewarding making patients better.
A scan has no intrinsic value. Its value is determined entirely by what it enables: a correct diagnosis, a treatment decision, a condition caught early, a patient reassured, a pathway shortened, an admission prevented. The location of that scan matters too: a scan delivered in the community, reported by a subspecialist and returned to the GP within days, generates significantly more value than the same scan delivered through a hospital outpatient pathway that takes weeks and costs the system more.
We do not measure success by the number of scans we perform. We measure it by the quality of the diagnoses we enable, the efficiency of the pathways we support, and the extent to which we keep patients out of hospital for investigations that belong in the community.
The right scan, at the right time, in the right place
Value begins at the point of referral. Our referral centre triages every request to ensure the appropriate modality is used for the clinical question. Getting the first scan right eliminates repeat imaging, reduces diagnostic delay and avoids unnecessary procedures. Delivering it in the community rather than an acute hospital further increases value: the patient avoids a hospital visit, the hospital retains capacity for complex cases, and the commissioner pays a community tariff rather than an acute one.
Did Not Attend rate through proactive patient engagement (target <3%)
report turnaround on all scans
Specialist reporting that drives clinical action
RAG-rated, every time
A report that simply describes what is seen adds limited value. A report that tells a clinician what to do next is transformative. Every Medical Imaging Partnership report is clinically actionable: Green supports discharge and self-management; Amber directs the patient to the right level of review; Red triggers immediate escalation. By ensuring only patients who genuinely need specialist intervention are referred onwards, we reduce secondary care outpatient demand and cost per episode.
Held to numbers
What we measure, and the targets we hold ourselves to
Referral to scan
Faster diagnosis and less time spent waiting and worrying.
Scan to report
Turnaround that enables timely clinical decisions, with urgent findings escalated without delay.
Actionable reporting
Every report carries a clear recommendation for the next clinical step.
Did-not-attend rate
Local, convenient appointments maximise utilisation and reduce waste.
Scanner utilisation
Operational efficiency that keeps capacity working for patients.
Patient satisfaction
Friends and Family Test recommendation, reviewed at site, pathway and board level.
Measuring what matters
PROMs and PREMs
Traditional metrics tell you what happened. They do not tell you whether it mattered. We collect Patient Reported Outcome Measures (symptom impact, reassurance and anxiety reduction, diagnostic value) and Patient Reported Experience Measures across six domains, from access and communication to compassion, environment, safety and overall experience.
Data is reviewed weekly at site level, monthly at pathway level and quarterly at board level, and it drives how we improve. When the evidence shows community-delivered pathways outperform hospital equivalents on outcomes and experience, we use it to make the case for further community investment.
