Before your scan

Your MRI safety checklist

MRI uses a very powerful magnetic field and radio waves to take detailed pictures of your body. It is normally very safe, but some metal implants, medical devices and other items can be unsafe. Please answer the questions below and let us know if the answer is yes to any of them.

Your answers stay on this page. Nothing is sent to us, saved or recorded unless you choose to send it at the end.

1Do any of these apply to you? Please read each question and think about your medical history.

Do you have a pacemaker or defibrillator?

Have you ever had surgery to your head, brain, spine, eyes or ears? For example a cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, shunt or retinal tack.

Have you had heart surgery, for example an artificial heart valve?

Have you had any operations with metal implants, tissue expanders or radiation seeds?

Do you have an implanted cardiac monitor? For example a REVEAL device or loop recorder.

Have you had a Pill cam or BRAVO pH monitor?

Have you had implants such as stents, filters, coils or clips, including a contraceptive coil or gastric band?

Have you ever had metal fragments in your eyes, or worked with metals at high speeds?

Do you have an artificial limb?

Have you ever had shrapnel injuries?Metal fragments from an injury.

Have you had any surgery in the last 6 weeks?

Do you have a neuro-stimulator or any other electronic device implanted?

Do you have any of the following conditions? Diabetes, epilepsy, blackouts, angina, asthma or COPD.

Do you have any nail products such as magnetic nail polish or nail extensions?

2Pregnancy

If you are aged 10 to 55: could you be pregnant? If you are unsure, please tell us.

3Other itemsPlease remove what you are able to. If you cannot remove something, let us know.

Do you have any of the following? Body piercings, tattoos, permanent cosmetics, hair extensions, smart rings, a fitness tracker, a hearing aid, contact lenses, magnetic eyelashes, skin patches such as pain relief, HRT or nicotine, metal dentures, or any other implant or device not listed above.

Still not sure about anything? Call our referral centre on 01293 534 043, seven days a week. We would always rather you asked. This questionnaire does not replace the safety checks we carry out with you on the day.
